Tips for better establishment of the crop stand

Agronomist shares guidelines for rural producers to increase crop productivity and profitability

In recent years, practices and techniques associated with the correct establishment of the stand have gained prominence in Brazilian agribusiness, since they are fundamental to obtaining a number of plants per hectare that is closer to the ideal, thus contributing directly to greater profitability and crop productivity.

Agronomist Bruno D'Ottaviano Pellegrini, Laborsan Agro's head of new product development, explains that soil analysis, area preparation, cultivar choice and seed treatment are fundamental to having a balanced and more productive ecosystem, contributing to the initial establishment of the stand and maximum expression of the productive potential of each variety/cultivar.

With a degree in Agronomy from the São Paulo State University in Botucatu, a master's degree in the area of soils and agro-environmental resources from the Agronomic Institute of Campinas and a postgraduate degree from the University of São Paulo, Poli, in management and execution of technological innovation projects, Pellegrini warns that there is no recipe, no standard to follow, but that some guidelines can contribute to good agricultural practices.

Here are some tips:

1) Don't use previous soil analyses

Soil analysis is a practical, low-cost tool that is essential for good fertilization and planting planning. Evaluate the various soil properties (chemical, physical and biological) crop by crop and make the corrections that are really necessary for good crop nutrition. No more, no less.

2) Pay attention to area preparation

There is little point in having the best seed and investing in technology if the soil is unable to supplement the crop. Use the best techniques, such as no-till farming, which reduces erosion and prevents the loss of essential nutrients, use contour lines, apply organic fertilizer whenever possible/necessary, etc. Contribute to the nutritional and biological aspects of planting. The soil is the basis of all cultivation!

3) Choose a compatible cultivar

Use the most suitable cultivar for your property, adapting the local reality to the investment possibilities. Pay attention to factors such as productivity, stability, cultivar composition and resistance to pests and diseases.

Give preference to certified, high-tech seeds, developed after a lot of research and studies based on scientific and proven data.

4) Invest in seed treatment

Proper seed treatment, with the right doses of fungicides and insecticides, as well as biological or non-biological additives when necessary, contributes to uniformity and the correct speed of germination. This phase (seed/seedling/plant) is very sensitive and any stress, whether due to water issues or the incidence of pests and/or diseases, can severely damage the crop's productive potential. So invest in a safe and effective seed treatment.

Laborsan Agro is a benchmark in seed treatment and agrochemical coloring. Among the solutions that have technology 100% exclusive to Laborsan Agro are film-coating (polymers and drying powders used in seed treatment with the main objective of adhesion); encrustation and pelleting (binders/"glues" and masses that add volume and weight to seeds), and coloring for agrochemicals and seeds (dyes, pigments and special coloring formulations).
